What Are Nickel Base Alloys?
Nickel base alloys are metallic materials in which nickel — typically 30 % to 76 % by composition — forms the primary metallic matrix. The nickel lattice carries chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, titanium, aluminium and niobium additions that together resist heat, creep, pitting, chloride stress-corrosion cracking and reducing-acid attack. Where pure stainless steel cannot survive in many refinery, marine, sour-service, nuclear and gas-turbine environments, engineers select nickel-base alloys for the most demanding service conditions in modern process plants.
Five commercial families dominate the export trade:
- Ni-Cr-Fe — Inconel 600 / 601, Incoloy 800 — high-temperature oxidation resistance.
- Ni-Cr-Mo — Inconel 625, Hastelloy C-276 — wet-process and chloride SCC resistance.
- Ni-Fe-Cr — Incoloy 800 / 825, Incoloy 8020 — heat and corrosion balance at moderate nickel cost.
- Ni-Cu — Monel 400 / K-500 — hydrofluoric acid, brine and seawater service.
- Fe-Ni superalloys — A286, Alloy 901 — age-hardenable strength for turbine discs, shafts and fasteners.
Alloy Family at a Glance
Each family is engineered for a different dominant service. The matrix below summarises the trade-off a buyer must weigh when sourcing nickel alloy against stainless steel or carbon steel.
| Family | Typical Ni content | Key strength | Limit | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ni-Cr-Fe (Inconel 600 / 601) | ≥ 72 % | Oxidation up to 1093 °C | Not for reducing acid | Furnace, heat-treatment fixtures |
| Ni-Cr-Mo (Inconel 625, Hastelloy C-276) | ≥ 58 % | Pitting / SCC / wet H2S | Higher cost than 316L | Heat exchangers, FGD, sour-service |
| Ni-Fe-Cr (Incoloy 800 / 825 / 8020) | 30–42 % | Heat + corrosion balance | Lower Ni = lower SCC margin | Steam generators, H2SO4 coolers |
| Ni-Cu (Monel 400 / K-500) | ≥ 63 % | HF, seawater, brine | Not for oxidising media | Marine pump shafts, HF alkylation |
| Fe-Ni superalloys (A286, Alloy 901) | 24–42 % | Age-hardenable strength | Limited corrosion resistance | Turbine discs, fasteners, blisks |

Why Choose MESCO for Nickel Base Alloys
- Family coverage under one PO. Thirteen grades across five families let you consolidate mixed-form orders instead of opening four.
- Standard-and-grade depth. Every order is matched against the ASTM, ASME or EN standard in your purchase order; substandard material is not shipped.
- Export-engineering support. Pre-shipment samples, third-party inspection, certificate-of-origin and fumigation are bundled into our standard shipping terms.
- Mill-direct pricing. Pricing is built against mill cost plus a transparent conversion margin; you see the same reference price the mill quotes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
MOQ is negotiable. As a practical guideline, plate / sheet items typically start at 50–200 kg, pipe / tube at 50–500 kg, bar at 100–500 kg. Stock lots can be split; mill orders follow minimum mill run quantities. Confirm with our sales team against your grade, form and quantity.
What is the typical lead time?
Ex-stock items ship within seven days of PO. Mill orders for plate and sheet typically run four to six weeks; pipe and bar four to eight weeks; forgings and fittings eight to ten weeks. Final lead time is confirmed against the mill schedule at quotation.
Do you provide Positive Material Identification (PMI)?
Yes. Every nickel-alloy heat is subjected to XRF PMI on the floor before shipment, and the result is recorded against the mill certificate. Witnessed PMI by third-party inspector is available on request.
Are your materials compliant with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service?
Inconel 625, Hastelloy C-276, Incoloy 825 and Monel K-500 are commonly delivered in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 sour-service condition. We document the limit (e.g. H2S partial pressure, temperature, chloride) in the mill certificate. Final acceptance is the buyer’s responsibility against their project specification.
What export documents do you provide?
Standard documents include commercial invoice, packing list, EN 10204 3.1 MTC, certificate of origin, fumigation certificate, and insurance policy. Third-party inspection certificates (TÜV, SGS, BV, DNV) and consular legalisation are available on request.
What warranty do you offer?
MESCO warrants that the material supplied conforms to the specification in the purchase order, supported by the mill certificate. Warranty period, claims procedure and limitation of liability are set out in our standard sales terms.
