Development history and Chinese market condition of zinc aluminum magnesium coated steel.
Z-A-M steel was originated from Japan. In 1985, Japan Iron and Steel Research Center developed Zn-4.5% Al-0.1% Mg coated steel, which was called “SuperZinc”, but the corrosion resistance is only double of ordinary hot-dip galvanized steel.
In the 1990s, Japanese began to vigorously develop Zn-Al-Mg multi-element alloy coating. Nisshin Steel Co., Ltd. took the lead in developing Zn-6% Al-3% Mg alloy coating, which was named ZAM, and the corrosion resistance of the alloy coating was about 10 times that of pure zinc coating.
In 2000, Nippon Steel Corporation developed a Zn-Al-Mg-Si high corrosion-resistant coated steel plate, named SuperDyma. The chemical composition of the coating is Al 10%-12%, Mg 2%-4%, Si< 0.1%, the rest is Zn. The corrosion resistance of this coating product is more than 5 times that of ordinary hot-dip galvanized coating. Then Thyssen, Tata, Voestalpine and other European enterprises have also developed their own hot-dip Z-A-M coated patented products. Different from Japanese "medium aluminum" hot-dip Z-A-M products mainly used in construction, the components of Z-A-M coating in Europe are all designed with "low aluminum" and focus on steel for automobiles.
In 2013, BlueScope Australia developed and produced high-aluminum Z-A-M composition system and named it "Next Generation ZINCALUME", mainly for construction steel. Among them, the zinc-aluminum-magnesium composition systems of Nisshin Steel, Nippon Steel, Posco steel, ArcelorMittal are mainly medium aluminum, which have good corrosion resistance, and mostly used for photo-thermal, photovoltaic, animal husbandry and construction purposes.
ThyssenKrupp, Voestalpine , Tata Steel, Wuppermann, and Salzgitter mainly use low-aluminum composition systems, which are mostly used for color-coated substrates, home appliances and high-surface applications for automobiles, and the physical quality of the products is good. Among them, the surface quality of ThyssenKrupp products reaches the O5 standard, are widely used in parts of car companies. BlueScope mainly uses high-aluminum component system, which is mostly used for construction purposes.
China developed this product late, but the development speed is very fast, which is what we are good at. Since 2014, China JISCO has started developing Zn-Al-Mg coated steel firstly and succeeded in the year of 2016. After that, Bao Steel, Tang Steel, An Steel, Capital Steel, Ma Steel, Pan Steel followed JISCO’s steps and developed their own compositions. Now, their Z-A-M steel are widely used in animal husbandry, aquaculture, construction, automobile, photovoltaic and home appliances. Product quality and after-sales service are guaranteed.
Including these Chinese factories, According to the different proportions of aluminum and magnesium in the coating, there are mainly 18 kinds of zinc-aluminum-magnesium alloy coating formulas commercialized domestically and internationally, and there are more than 23 mature manufacturing companies with the whole process world wide.
Except the governmental factories, some Chinese private mills are also turning to this direction and started to manufacture Z-A-M coated steel. Comparing with Chinese governmental factories, their quality is not so good and stable, some are OK some are bad, there is no after-sales service and lack of guarantee.
Thickness of Z-A-M steel which is manufactured by private mills is up to 3.5mm, that of governmental steel, can reach 8mm. Widths are mainly till 1250mm for private mills, and that of governmental ones, can reach 1680mm.
With the increasing awareness of this product in Chinese domestic and international market, the demand has increased significantly compared to before, and will be even more in future. And Z-A-M will definitely become the substitute for galvanized steel and galvalume steel in the future.
