Importing Steel from China: A Step-by-Step Guide for First-Time Buyers

Step 1: Define Your Steel Requirements

The most expensive mistake is ordering the wrong product. Nail down: product category (HRC, CRC, galvanized, galvalume, prepainted, Zn-Al-Mg), grade and standard (ASTM, EN, JIS), dimensions, surface requirements, and quantity in multiples of container loads (~25 tons per 20ft, ~28 tons per 40ft).

Step 2: Source and Vet Suppliers

Three primary channels: B2B platforms (Alibaba, Made-in-China), industry trade shows (Canton Fair, Metal-Expo), and direct referrals. Regardless of channel, verify business license, export registration, ISO certifications, and recent client references. A supplier with 15+ years of export history and Fortune 500 clients has proven accountability.

Step 3: Request and Compare Quotations

Send your detailed RFQ to 3-5 shortlisted suppliers. A proper quotation includes unit price, Incoterms (FOB/CIF/CFR), packing details, lead time, payment terms (T/T or L/C), and MTC availability. Warning: If one supplier quotes 15-20% below others, it's often off-grade material or lighter coating than specified.

Step 4: Payment and Production

Standard terms: 30% deposit T/T to start production, 70% against copy of shipping documents. L/C at sight is more secure for first-time buyers. Stocked items can ship within 3-7 days; mill production takes 15-45 days.

Step 5: Quality Inspection (Non-Negotiable)

Never ship without independent inspection. Options: SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek ($500-1,500 per inspection). Inspection checklist: dimensional check, visual inspection, MTC review, coating weight test, and packing condition.

Step 6: Shipping and Logistics

Ocean freight from Chinese ports: Dalian to Dubai 18-22 days ($1,800-2,400), Tianjin to Rotterdam 30-35 days ($3,200-4,500), Shanghai to LA 14-18 days ($2,500-3,500). Always get live freight quotes from your forwarder.

Step 7: Customs Clearance

Prepare: Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, MTC, Fumigation Certificate, and Insurance Certificate. Check your country's HS code and applicable anti-dumping duties before ordering.

Step 8: Receive and Build the Relationship

Inspect container exterior before opening, photograph unpacking, spot-check dimensions, test samples, and provide feedback to your supplier. Start small — a $100 pre-shipment sample before a $50,000 container.
